Closing Out 2013, Preparing for Conference Play

Needless to say, we were very disappointed with the loss to UK. Give them credit, they were poised and made big shots. Our mishaps continue on the defense end.

Four key things are hurting us:

*When our players get one foul, they lose their aggressiveness.

*We need to defend the paint; 42 points there is absurd.

*Guards were non-existent in the first half rebounding the ball.

*Defensive communication was a big issue again. We went after Julius Randle way too late with our traps.

What’s our biggest weakness?

Let me give you an analogy of our front court knowing who they are.  It’s like having Christina Aguilera to sing at a concert, she comes out, ignores her great voice and dances for two hours. That's our front court. I remember as if were yesterday asking Rodrick Rhodes, who played for me at UK, this question.  You are a great defender, slasher and passer -- why are you trying to show everyone the 3pt shot is your thing?

People come to watch Christina sing.

People would come to watch Rodrick pass, slash, and defend.

That makes them both good.

In other words, Montrezl and Chane – Need to dominate the paint. Rebound like Kenneth Faried , defend like Dennis Rodman, block shots and dunk.  Score off rip moves and leave the dancing to Justin Timberlake.  After all, what got Amare’ Stoudemire recognized wasn't his jump shot and passing abilities.

2013 comes to pass in a few days. It was just an incredible year.

*Back to back BIG EAST Championships (last game in Madison Square Garden)

*16 games won in a row to close out the season

*Incredible execution at tournament time

* A National Championship, with one of the truly exciting final games played.

* Gorgui and Peyton prospering after a lot of hard work.

There are no layups in conference play.  Central Florida is a very experienced and talented offensive team. They have had nine days to prepare for us. Here are some key stats with the UCF team (8-3):

-Effective FG% (weigh 3s 50% more heavy than 2s) – 54.1% #40 Nationally (89th percentile)

-Offensive rebounding 37.2% 44th nationally ( 88th percentile)

-Defensive rebounding 78% 49th nationally ( 87th percentile)

-3FG%-38.9% 40th nationally (48.5% over last 5 games)

-3FG% defense 30.3%- 55th nationally (83rd percentile)

-Steal%-11.4% 30th nationally (91st percentile)

My wish list for 2014:

* Focus from our players to better understand scouting reports

* Play defense the way Cardinal teams do it. Stop worrying about fouls and dig in.

* Understand what ego means: “edging greatness out”

*Stay on a One Day Contract.  Yesterday is to be cherished and lessons learned. Tomorrow should be planned.  Today is our contract to get renewed and excel.

Cardinal fans, they say only 8% of resolutions are accomplished. Whatever you decide to do, take it one day at a time.

I wish you good health and happiness in 2014!

It’s been a great ride, one that I hope will continue.

Go Cards!
